One of the great things about being a Peace Corps Volunteer in Guatemala is being able to take part in the daily lives of people in our towns, and also in the special occasions. In the run-up to Guatemala’s Independence Day on September 15th, the sounds of marching bands practicing could be heard wafting-up from many of the schools in my town, and on September 9th, a competition was held in my town’s central square (pictured above and a short video clip below). On September 14th, many school bands traveled to the local large city of Quetzaltenango (also called Xela) for a regional competition.
